Osaka’s rainy Monday, by the numbers – and what tonight still holds

Osaka got its rainy Monday. At Otemae, 15mm fell in the three hours to 16:00, with 37.5mm over the preceding 24 hours and 87mm over 72 hours. Osaka got its rainy Monday. At Otemae, 15mm fell in the three hours to 16:00, with 37.5mm over the preceding 24 hours and 87mm over 72 hours. Those are rolling totals, not three versions of today’s rainfall. The useful change this afternoon is in the forecast: the chance of warning-level rain has fallen.

The Osaka Regional Headquarters’ fifth rain bulletin, issued at 16:01 on October 26, says that risk is now lower. It ends this particular series of heavy-rain bulletins. That is a change from the morning’s warning that developing or stationary rain clouds could push conditions to warning level. It is not a declaration that the remaining rain cannot cause trouble.

The same bulletin keeps the caution for flooding in low-lying land and rising rivers through early evening, and for landslides through late tonight. A front remains near western Japan’s southern coast, with warm, moist air feeding towards it. Less alarming wording is welcome. It still comes with instructions.

Osaka City’s warning page carried heavy-rain, strong-wind and wave advisories at its 15:30 update. No warning was listed. The thunder advisory shown this morning was no longer on that list. Those are the city’s advisories; the wider prefectural bulletin’s landslide caution is not a claim that every part of Osaka City has the same exposure.

The Otemae gauge recorded 7.5mm in the hour to noon, followed by 4.5mm to 13:00 and 5.5mm in each of the next two hours. By 16:10, the latest rolling hourly reading was 4.5mm. One central-city gauge cannot speak for the whole prefecture, but it gives the afternoon a scale beyond another rain-cloud icon.

For the trip home: the official cautions still extend into tonight. Keep an eye on local updates rather than treating the end of the bulletin series as an all-clear. Tomorrow’s weather can wait for tomorrow’s forecast. Tonight’s remaining cautions are specific enough.
