Osaka’s winter lights have three different starting dates. Put the wrong one in your calendar and you could turn up for a ceremony that is still weeks away, or expect a projection show that has not started.
Midosuji Illumination begins next Tuesday, November 3, a public holiday. The lights run from around 17:00 until 01:00 along roughly four kilometres, from Hanshin-mae intersection in Umeda to Namba-nishiguchi. The run ends December 31. Viewing the street illumination is free.
This year's organising idea is time. Ahead of Midosuji's 90th anniversary in May 2027, five sections trace the street from the 1940s to the present. Candle colours in the north give way to champagne gold and mixed colours through Semba, then blue and white mixes farther south. You do not have to walk the whole route: Osaka Metro lists Umeda, Yodoyabashi, Hommachi, Shinsaibashi and Namba as access points.
The road-opening ceremony is not on opening night. It is scheduled for Monday, November 23, 17:00-19:00, after Midosuji Runway. Only the section between Yodoyabashi and Semba-chuo 3 intersections is listed for pedestrian opening. The city says rain does not automatically cancel it, but severe weather does. Those two hours are not permission to walk into the carriageway on other nights.
Nakanoshima has its own split timetable. City Hall's illuminated facade and the Miotsukushi Promenade illumination start November 3 and run until December 31, 17:00-01:00. The main OSAKA Light Renaissance programme, including Central Public Hall's projection mapping, waits until Friday, December 11 and ends Christmas Day. November's early lights are not the full December event.
There is also a smaller timetable trap at Kita Mido. The city's detailed programme lists motion-responsive digital art from around 17:00 to 23:00, but not November 17-24 or December 11. That means the November 23 pedestrian-opening night falls inside its listed break.
For a simple first visit, choose one stretch and arrive after the lights are due on. The organiser recommends public transport and says there is no dedicated visitor parking or dedicated temporary toilet provision for Midosuji. Keep the pavement clear: its photography rules ask visitors to avoid tripods, large equipment and behaviour that puts walkers or traffic at risk.
One last distinction: the wider Festival of Lights continues into January 31, 2027, but only some area programmes run after New Year's Day. That is not an extension of Midosuji's December 31 finish. The headline season is longer than the street's own run.
