The symbol of last year's expo will not entirely become scrap. Following an October 28 board meeting, the Expo association says about 7,400 cubic metres of the Grand Roof Ring's timber will be reused, just under 70 percent of what can be recovered. Unbolting the wooden joinery piece by piece adds ¥2.4 billion to the demolition bill.
The arithmetic, from reporting on the decision: the two-kilometre ring used about 27,000 cubic metres of timber. About 15,900 of that cannot be reused at all, locked into foundations or threaded with rebar and bolts. Of the remainder, about 4,200 cubic metres will be transferred to more than 80 municipalities and companies that answered a public call, and about 3,200 cubic metres stay on site in the preserved 200-metre northeast section. Together that is the reported 67 percent.
Where the wood ends up
Named destinations include disaster-recovery public housing in Suzu, Ishikawa Prefecture, and a tower set to be a centerpiece of the international horticultural expo opening in Yokohama in March 2027. The association had originally planned to demolish the entire ring; the transfers followed the public appeal for takers, and the northeast fragment survived after calls to keep part of it standing.
An association official called the reuse volume limited but symbolically useful. A government official quoted in the same coverage was blunter: had the ring been designed to come apart from the start, far more of it could have been recovered. That is the quoted official’s assessment of the expo’s flagship timber structure, not our measurement.
The extra cost is already inside the budget, on paper
Building and demolishing the ring together run about ¥35 billion. The association says total venue construction stays within the maximum ¥235 billion budget, reserves included, so the ¥2.4 billion requires no new money. That is an accounting statement, not a small number.
Dismantling continues around the preserved section. When it ends, the site keeps a 200-metre fragment of the ring, and 4,200 cubic metres of its timber goes to work elsewhere. The rest was never given the option.
