Kyoto's autumn taxi experiment comes with a useful warning for anyone arriving with a suitcase: this is not an airport transfer with a smaller bill. GO Economy is a shared ride between set boarding spots, with room for one lap-sized bag. Miss the departure and the published charge is the full fare.
GO announced the Kyoto trial on October 29. The planned run is November 1-29, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, 10:00-16:00. It covers roughly four kilometres between Kyoto Station's Karasuma side and Higashiyama, with 14 boarding and drop-off spots. Kodaiji is drop-off only. Ten taxi companies and 122 vehicles are listed.
What the cheaper fare buys
The company describes the Kyoto price as about half a normal taxi fare and pickup charges, calculated per seat against its advance-fare method. That is an operator comparison, not a flat price for every journey. A second seat is cheaper than the first; check the total shown in the app before confirming. Payment is through GO Pay.
Use the Economy tab in the updated GO app, choose the boarding and arrival spots, then select a departure. The general service page allows up to two seats in one booking. Do not confuse a vehicle carrying several passengers with a booking for an entire group.
The rules ask passengers not to make calls, film, eat or drink inside. Large luggage, including suitcases, is excluded by the service guide. Vehicles leave at the scheduled time without waiting. Cancellation charges can also apply before departure; the exact cutoff is shown in the booking details.
The stop is not the temple gate
The taxi association says the Kiyomizudera (Gojo-dori) stop is on Higashioji-dori to avoid congestion, roughly a 15-minute walk from the temple. A temple name on an app pin does not remove the hill or the walk.
There is also a separate fixed-route shared taxi from Kyoto Station towards Sanjusangendo, Kiyomizudera and Yasaka Shrine. The association lists that service at ¥500 per person, half-hourly in the 10:00-12:00 hours, outbound with drop-offs only. It is not GO Economy's fare or operating timetable.
The stated aim is to ease pressure on station queues and crowded buses. That is a goal, not a measured result. For now, the useful test is narrower: whether a set spot, shared vehicle and light bag fit the journey you actually need. Live seats and exact fares were not checked in the app.
